Ever get the feeling that automakers aren’t really listening to what it is that you want in an automobile?… Well, Audi is. Following what it calls “an outpouring of enthusiasts’ support,” the German automaker has announced that it is bringing the new, 2016 A3 Sportback to the US under diesel power, in the summer of 2015.Unveiled today at the New York Auto Show, the new A3 TDI Sportback joins an expanding range of A3 models available Stateside. Whereas the Sportback hatch was until now only slated to be offered in E-Tron hybrid form, and the TDI only as a sedan, this model combines the bodystyle of the former with the power of the latter. The new TDI slots into the family alongside the gasoline-powered A3 and S3 sedans and A3 Cabriolet as well.Original Audi A3 was released in 1996. It is a compact luxury car and it was the first small car from this German manufacturer after almost two decades (first after 1978 Audi 50). Current model is in its third generation, which was released in 2012. Although generation-change is still far away, company prepares some new things for 2016 Audi A3. According to latest information, it is expected that new model will be offered in hatchback body style once again, after few years of break. As with the previous A3 TDI, the 2016 model is front-wheel drive and the brand has yet to say a peep about Quattro’s Norseman-like qualities in the winter. A new 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel developing 150 horsepower (up 10 over its predecessor’s mill) pairs with the gasoline A3’s six-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic. Audi didn’t divulge torque or fuel-economy figures, but considering the outgoing model’s 236 lb-ft and hefty EPA-rated 30 mpg city and 42 mpg highway ratings, we’re sure the final numbers will go up when the car goes on sale next summer. An A3 TDI sedan will debut stateside later this year, along with an e-tron plug-in hybrid version of the A3 Sportback sometime after.
